From CAD to Cinema: How Animation Brings Engineering to Life

When Clayton Equipment asked us to help tell the story of their energy-efficient locomotives, we knew we weren’t just animating trains. We were animating ingenuity.

That project — now one of our favourite case studies — took raw CAD data and turned it into a sleek, cinematic 3D film using Unreal Engine. But more than that, it demonstrated how animation can transform technical brilliance into something deeply engaging, emotionally resonant, and incredibly clear.

Why animation?

Engineering projects are often big, brilliant, and... kind of baffling. Especially if you’re not an engineer. CAD files, while bursting with detail, aren’t exactly built for storytelling. That’s where animation comes in.

Animation allows you to simplify the complex, highlight what matters, and bring abstract features to life with lighting, texture, and movement. It shows your audience what your product does — not just what it looks like.

Our team is fluent in both visual communication and the technical side of CAD. We work with a wide range of file types, including:

  • Native formats like SOLIDWORKS (.SLDPRT), AutoCAD (.DWG), and other proprietary files

  • Neutral formats such as STEP (.stp), DXF (.dxf), and STL (.stl)

  • Modeling kernel formats like Parasolid (.x_t)

We clean and optimise this data, converting it into animatable 3D objects that serve the story. Then we bring in the real magic: stylised textures, cinematic lighting, compelling camera moves, and a narrative that resonates with your audience.

Who we work with

Our clients come from across the industrial spectrum:

  • Locomotive and heavy machinery manufacturers

  • Automated process engineering firms

  • Medical device innovators

  • Construction material manufacturers

  • Environmental and industrial service providers

Whether it’s a cutting-edge clean-energy train or a robot arm assembling next-gen building materials, we help turn your tech into stories that connect.

The result?

A visual experience that educates, inspires, and sticks.

Animation bridges the gap between specialist knowledge and everyday understanding. It transforms technical documentation into communication that engages hearts and minds.
