Amec Foster Wheeler
How high-end 3D animation turned "Death by PowerPoint" into an engaging safety culture.
"Safety is boring. Make it fun."
That was the brief from Steve, Head of Health & Safety at Amec Foster Wheeler (now part of Wood Group).
Steve faced a problem common to global construction giants: safety fatigue. His team was delivering the same dry, text-heavy slide presentations to contractors day in and day out. The result? Disengagement, "zoning out," and critical messages getting lost in translation across their diverse, international workforce.
With the company facing a transition, Steve wanted to leave a lasting legacy. He needed a campaign that would wake people up, transcend language barriers, and prove that the company was willing to invest in the highest quality training for its staff.
"Working with C&W was an absolute joy. They were able to guide me through the animation process, offering substantial experience and always taking my needs into account. I wouldn't hesitate to work with them again."
— Ian Ousbey, Pennon
Pixar-Quality Prevention
We moved away from the standard "corporate explainer" style and treated this project like a short film. The goal was to create characters and scenarios that felt like TV entertainment, not a lecture.
Visual-First Storytelling: We utilized "broad strokes" visual humor—like characters struggling with ladders or tools—to communicate risks instantly. This slapstick approach meant the safety message was understood immediately by any worker, regardless of their native language or literacy level.
The "Icebreaker" Strategy: These videos were designed to be the "opening act" for site briefings. Instead of a manager reading from a clipboard, the session opened with a high-impact animation that grabbed attention and set a positive tone for the toolbox talk.
High-Fidelity 3D: By using high-end 3D character animation, we created a spectacle that staff actually wanted to watch, boosting morale and retention.
"It was a pleasure to work with Carse & Waterman, they quickly grasped our complex brief and produced a simple yet captivating animated infographic."

A Multi-Channel Campaign
A video only lasts a few minutes, but safety needs to be constant. We didn't just deliver MP4 files; we built a visual safety brand.
We provided Amec Foster Wheeler with high-resolution renders of the characters to be used on site posters and print materials. This ensured that the friendly faces from the morning briefing remained visible around the site all day, reinforcing the safety message long after the screen was turned off.
"“Health and Safety is never a joke, but it can be fun, and that’s why animated videos are so effective”
— Gary Carse , Health and Safety Creative Director
